Afghanistan/Pakistan/Terrorism: Taleban vows to continue fighting despite Mehsud’s death

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taleban spokesman in Afghanistan, declared on Friday that the Afghan insurgency will not be deterred by the death of Tehreek-e-Taleban Pakistan’s (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud. He vowed to continue the arms struggle against foreign forces. “The Taleban’s jihad will not be affected if a Pakistani Taleban leader is killed on the other side of the Durand line.” “We feel sympathy for our brothers who fight for the same cause, but resistance against the Afghan government and its foreign allies will continue,” he added.

The statement came amid claims by Pakistani intelligence officials that Mehsud has been killed in a US air raid on Wednesday this week. Unites States is carrying out an investigation into the reports. Although a US led offensive ousted the Taleban from Afghanistan in fall 2001, the insurgents now hide and train across the border in neighbouring Pakistan. There are more than 100,000 Western troops battling the Taleban resurgence.
